Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. He received the title of missile man due to his immense contribution in the field of aeronautics. He became president in 2002 and served till 2007 and during his presidency, his name became synonymous as the people’s president. He died on 27th July 2015.
He was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, and studied physics and aerospace engineering. He spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and was intimately involved in India’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts.
He thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.
